This conference will explore the interconnections between nature, social cohesion/justice, and the city. As part of this, it will examine a variety of cross-cutting issues including urban sustainability, environmental justice, democratic policymaking and the future of urban environmental politics.
It is being organised by the University of Manchester and Action for Sustainable Living (http://www.afsl.org.uk), and will bring together academics, policymakers and NGOs to discuss these issues.
The programme is as follows:
Session 1. Urban sustainabilities: Policies, practices and ideologies
Speakers: Mike Raco (King's College London), Chris Wright (Action for Sustainable Living) and Simon Robinson (Manchester Knowledge)
Session 2. Democratic urban environmental politics?
Speakers: Erik Swyngedouw (University of Manchester), Tim McMahon (MERCi) and Lucy Powell (Manchester City Council)
Session 3. Social justice and the urban environment
Speakers: Gordon Walker (Lancaster University), Judy Ling Wong (Black Environment Network) plus another tbc
Session 4. The future of urban environmental politics
Speakers: Mark Whitehead (Aberystwyth University), Koreen Thielen (ARUP) and Mike Reardon (Manchester City Council)
