Potential for electric vehicle charging points near you?

Dear all,

Whilst doing a bit of digging about car shares, I came across an initiative called Plugged in Places' by a company called CO2Sense (part of Yorkshire Forward). They are currently looking at ways of getting more electric vehicle charging points up and running across the UK, including in our area.

Plugged in Places are looking for potential sites, where the owners of the sites are willing to provide between 50% and 70% of the funding. They already have around 80 site owners across the region who confirmed they were prepared to pay 50% of the cost and looking down the list the nearest locations to us are:

- Sheffield University
- Sheffield International Venues
- Sheffield Hallam University

CO2 Sense are also exploring whether the public bodies that own key sites like Sheffield train station would be prepared to part-fund the installation of electric vehicle charging posts.

Please could you let me know if you are aware of any suitable sites for charging points, particularly if the owners might provide between 50% to 70% of the funding (which will roughly equate to between £7,000 and £10,000). I will forward the info on to CO2 Sense.

I would love to have an electic charging point in hunters bar, if anyone has any good contacts or ideas on how we might do this, pl let me know!

Thanks for the reply Iain - and sorry I didn't make it to the last euro cafe.

Some of the technical details are a bit much for my poor wee brain, but from a very quick skim the articles seem to be saying that there isn't enough lithium etc to go round, and current batteries are based on technology which are also pretty bad for the environment. All of which I would agree with, but I would also say that everything we do has some impact - there is never a perfect solution. If there are other technologies that are better than batteries then let's have 'em - but quickly, and develop them alongside low carbon technology that is here right now (such as EVs). It's taken so long for even electric vehicles to finally surface marginally into the common consciousness and mainstream production, that I think waiting for the next, even better technology will be a long way off. I'd take a mix of constantly developing low carbon vehicles over sticking with fossil fuels right now!

So if anyone does think of any potential EV charging sites, it will definitely help as part of the low carbon technology mix we need. It would also save a lot of traffic-fumes related illness round town - where EVs really could make a difference - estimated to cost the NHS up to £13bn a year, according to a recent all party select committee report.
